Debuting on HBO this past July, THE DEFIANT ONES tells the stories of Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre – one the son of a Brooklyn longshoreman, the other straight out of Compton. Director Allen Hughes made an unquestionably bold film about their unlikely but unbreakable partnership and surprising leading roles in a series of transformative events in contemporary culture. In addition to candid, revelatory interviews with both Iovine and Dre, the film also includes interviews with such music icons as Bono, David Geffen, Eminem, Nas, Stevie Nicks, Kendrick Lamar, Ice Cube, Gwen Stefani, Jon Landau, Tom Petty, Trent Reznor, Snoop Dogg, Bruce Springsteen, Diddy and will.i.am. THE DEFIANT ONES features never-before-seen footage from a multitude of recording and writing sessions with Eazy-E, JJ Fad, Stevie Nicks, N.W.A., Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen and U2, among others.

THE DEFIANT ONES was hailed as “dazzling and definitive” by the Washington Post and “deeply engrossing” by the Los Angeles Times, while the Hollywood Reporter called it “illuminating and entertaining” and “brilliant.” This unique and inspiring tale shows how decades of defiance and determination helped Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre build a few empires, including their landmark 2014 deal to sell Beats Electronics to Apple for $3 billion. The result is a master class in how to work your way up from the bottom to beyond your wildest dreams.
